How Extrude Hone Inc. Benefits the Automotive Industry

Ever wonder how our patented process benefits the automotive industry? Find out in this informative blog from Extrude Hone AFM.

A bit of history

Before we get into the nitty-gritty aspects of how AFM (abrasive flow machining) is applied to the industry, let’s talk a little about history. Back in the 1970s, one of Extrude Hone AFM’s founders engineered the concept of “Powerflow” which involves using AFM techniques to dramatically enhance the capabilities of certain combustion engine parts. By 1992, major companies like Ford had begun incorporating our AFM process for their vehicles. Today, many major auto manufacturers rely on AFM to surface finish and polish their machined parts so they perform at their best every day. Even though so many automotive manufacturers use AFM for various machined parts in their vehicles, the average person still has no idea what we do here at Extrude Hone AFM.

What does AFM do for the automotive industry?

AFM effectively cleans out tiny irregularities (even at the microscopic level) in manufactured parts to improve the interior surface finish of various passages. This promotes optimal flow throughout each workpiece. We most often apply our patented process to intake manifolds, where removing about 1mm of surface material can deliver dramatic improvements in performance. In most cases, the AFM process result in a 25% increase in flow capability for air and/or fuel.

Better performance

Top automotive manufacturers have found that sending key components to Extrude Hone AFM has improved their performance because air and fuel are able to pass through them much faster. As a result, automobiles have more intense combustion and better volumetric efficiency. As the exhaust flows more freely, the cylinder can be evacuated more completely after combustion, making room for a stronger amount of fuel and air to pass through for the next ignition. Improvements in horsepower, thrust, and torque will naturally vary according to how your equipment is configured and tuned, but they will definitely be enhanced after your key components like the intake manifolds go through the AFM process.

More fuel efficiency

Everyone would like their cars and trucks to be more fuel efficient so they won’t have to spend as much of their hard-earned money on gas (and because it’s better for the environment!). Deliver on that desire with AFM from Extrude Hone AFM. The AFM process improves combustion to ensure that more of the fuel in the gas tank actually gets used by the engine. Each fill up lasts longer when various components in automobiles are sent to Extrude Hone AFM to go through our patented process.

Cleaner exhaust emissions

We’re all increasingly aware of reducing pollution in our environment. The AFM process improves combustion, which effectively reduces emissions, too. The top contributor to harmful emissions is unspent fuel, so it makes sense that since more fuel is effectively used by the engine after parts have been extrude honed, AFM makes a difference in reducing emissions. AFM reduces emissions and helps keep our precious air cleaner each day.
