Abrasive Flow Machining Process

Extrude Hone AFM is a leader in finishing 3D printed metal parts.

For over the past decade Extrude Hone AFM has been tied to the rapidly growing new technology of additive manufacturing. With the emergence of 3D printing of metals, we have begun assisting many companies with the surface finish improvements of critical passageways for their prototypes as well as production parts.

When it comes to design with this nontraditional machining process, the possibilities have and will continue to jump extremely far “out of the box.” This will bring challenges, but it is very exciting compared to the restrictions traditional machining and manufacturing design has run into for over a century.

Along with these extreme designs come very intricate flow passages for fuel, air, oil, etc. In order to achieve the high performance and efficiency promised by the design, we have to fulfill critical needs as far as surface finish in some very hard to reach recesses, slots, vanes and passageways, some as small as 0.040.

We have processed almost every material from aluminum to Inconel. Depending on layering size and quality of material used, we have reached surfaces as beautiful as a 4ra.
