During AFM machining, abrasive media is forced by a hydraulic ram through the workpiece to surface finish and polish every surface. All raised positive features on the surface are removed, even at the microscopic level. As the media moves through the workpiece, it reaches every nook and cranny, removing more material in restricted areas. The pressure exerted by the media on all contacting surfaces results in a very uniform finish.
The abrasiveness of the media is customized to achieve exact intended results. It can be very abrasive or not as much depending on how much material needs to be removed. The amount of material removed from each workpiece varies based on the type of material, its hardness, quality or density of it, and the size and amount of passages to be processed.
