Hydraulics & AFM: Your Frequently Asked Questions Answered

Are you wondering how abrasive flow machining can escalate your hydraulic operation? If so, you are not alone. At Extrude Hone AFM, we offer abrasive flow machining services that can improve your hydraulics. Not sure how? That’s what we are here for, to answer your frequently asked questions regarding hydraulics. Keep reading to learn more about abrasive flow machining and how it works.

We have a hydraulic valve body with over 100 intersecting holes, of differing sizes. Can Extrude Hone AFM deburr all these intersections?

Yes! That is one of the benefits of abrasive flow machining. By pushing our media through the workpiece, all of the intersecting holes can be deburred and radiused simultaneously.

How do you control the amount of material removed?

There are two main aspects that determine how we control the amount of material removed from your hydraulic component. They are the workpiece itself and the abrasive laden media. The amount removed depends on the following factors:

Workpiece:

  • Type of material
  • Hardness of material
  • Quality or density of the material
  • Size and amount of passages to be processed

Media:

  • The media flow rate or speed of each pass or cycle
  • Media carrier viscosity: high, medium, low, or different combinations of 2 will change the characteristics of the media's effectiveness on different materials and hole sizes
  • Abrasive particle size: ranging from a fine powder-like 1000-grit to 8-grit comparable to small rocks or gravel
  • Abrasive concentration per pound of media

What dimensional tolerances can Extrude Hone hold?

At Extrude Hone AFM, we pride ourselves in meeting or exceeding the tolerances that you specify. In fact, we can hold tolerances within 1 – ten thousandths of an inch (.00001). A human hair is approximately three to four-thousandths of an inch in diameter (.003-.004).
