EDM Recast Removal and Extrude Hone AFM

Do you use EDM processed parts? Protect them from tensile stresses when you sent them to Extrude Hone AFM to remove the recast layer. Extrude Hone AFM has provided surface finish polishing on EDM processed parts for over 53 years, so you can definitely entrust your parts to our meticulous care. When your parts are done at Extrude Hone AFM, they’ll resist crack propagation. Molds and dies will help in forming process and part release after they’ve been extrude hones.

Our patented process is customized to each project we are asked to do. It’s possible for us to polish a 1 micron (40Ra) surface finish down to a 0.1 micron (4Ra) surface finish without altering the required shape of the workpiece.

Do you have a few parts or a few thousand parts that have been EDM processed? Call Extrude Hone AFM at (562) 531-2976 to request your custom estimate today.

What happens when components are sent to Extrude Hone AFM?

Most components are sent to Extrude Hone AFM to go through our patented AFM process. Our abrasive flow machining process is 100% customizable according to your exact needs. During AFM, the abrasive media flows through the workpiece, which erodes it in a very precise way. Abrasive particles in the media contact raised positive features on the surface of the workpiece and remove them. A hydraulic ram forces the media through the workpiece so that it becomes a flexible file or slug that precisely molds itself to the shape of the workpiece. Wherever the media is most restricted, the highest amount of material is removed as the flow speed and pressure of the media are increased in these areas. The resulting uniform finish is a result of the pressure exerted by the media on all contacting surfaces.

You’re in control

As we previously mentioned, AFM is a highly controllable, customizable machining process. We can adjust the media flow rate and pressure, volume, and type of media, as well as the media temperature and as a result, the amount material that is removed. For any given application, the surface finish improvement, radius generation and/or stock removal can be definitively determined and monitored to ensure perfect repeatability.
