Surface finishes and materials

A perfectly polished surface finish is essential to the proper performance of any machinery component. If you need your component to perform efficiently and dependably with fuel, air, oil, food, or perhaps even blood flowing through it, you need to send it to Extrude Hone AFM to have it go through our patented process. After conventional machining, casting, electrical discharge machining (EDM), or 3D selective laser sintered application of your component, the flow will be affected by the positives and negatives (or peaks and valleys) left on the surface.

If a component does not go through the Extrude Hone AFM process and its surface finish is left as-is, this unfinished surfaces can result in flow restrictions and contamination. For example, microscopic jagged edges can alter flow and cause foreign object damage as well. This is especially serious in medical, food processing, and other industries that require absolute hygiene. Machinery can easily become contaminated with microscopic particles that compromise cleanliness.

Don’t risk it

Make sure the surface finish of your component is absolutely perfect by sending all your key components to Extrude Hone AFM to undergo our patented process. At Extrude Hone AFM, our main purpose is to improve the surface finish of a desired target while staying precisely within the blueprint specifications. That’s why each project we undertake is specifically designed and calibrated to achieve unique, repeatable results.

Materials that can be extrude honed

One question we often receive here at Extrude Hone AFM is: what materials can be extrude honed? The answer is very simple – any metal material. Our process improves the surface finish of any and all metals including titanium and Inconel, super alloys, hardened, and difficult-to-machine materials, as well as all soft materials such as aluminum, bronze, and copper.

What will the results be?

Our finishes vary because they’re based on the geometry of the passages in the component and the type of material that undergoes the Extrude Hone AFM process. Typical finish improvements consist of:

  • 16-8ra improved to a 3-4ra
  • 32ra improved to an 8ra or better
  • 64ra improved to a 16ra or better
  • 125ra improved to a 63ra or better
  • 300ra to a 125ra or better.
  • Etc.
