How Your Industry Can Benefit from Extrude Hone AFM: Aerospace

Sending components to Extrude Hone AFM improves outcomes in many industries. This blog series highlights each of the main industries we serve. This particular article is the third in the series.

The first one explained how the automotive industry benefits from sending components to Extrude Hone AFM. You can read all about that here.

The second industry we covered in this blog series is the food processing industry. It’s essential to keep food processing machinery clean and hygienic to ensure maximum safety. Sending components to Extrude Hone AFM deburrs and polishes them, resulting in improved food safety – read more about it here.

This article highlights another key industry – aerospace. This industry is incredibly close to our hearts because we initially crafted our process to serve it. We invented the extrude honing process to deburr and finish essential aircraft hydraulic and fuel system components. Our process has been specifically designed to be effective on even the most stringent aerospace manufacturing specs.

We provide AFM services for many areas of the aerospace industry including:

  • Improving airfoil surface conditions on compressor and turbine section components following profile milling, casting, EDM, or ECM operations
  • Edge finishing of holes and attachment features to improve the mechanical fatigue strength of blades, disks, hubs, and shafts with controlled, polished true radius edges
  • Precisely removing thermal recast layers left by laser or EDM operations
  • Adjusting air flow resistance of blades, vanes, combustion liners, nozzles, and diffusers
  • Finishing accessory parts, such as fuel spray nozzles, fuel control bodies, and bearing components
  • Reworking components to remove coke and carbon deposits, improve surface integrity, or enhance eddy current readings

Results when aerospace components are sent to Extrude Hone AFM

There are so many benefits to sending aerospace components to Extrude Hone AFM. Our patented process allows even the most inaccessible areas to be deburred, polished, and finished. Surface finish on cast blades is improved from an original 70 micro inch finish to a 16 micro inch (ra). Get increased fatigue strength with precise, polished edge radii on the attachment features of disks and blades after they go through the AFM process. Highly stressed components can also be improved with the absolute removal of thermal machining recast after EDM or laser machining. Another result of sending components to Extrude Hone AFM will be that when the material is removed from the blades as well as the resulting surface improvement on the blade faces will enable more balanced flow capability and added flow capacity, especially at high rpm.
