Send your Semi Conductors to Extrude Hone AFM

When semi conductors are manufactured, it’s essential that the surface finish is polished perfectly so it’s as smooth and absolutely immaculate when it’s finally ready for use. If your company manufactures semi conductors, you may be wondering, how could sending your components to Extrude Hone AFM benefit your results?

People have been sending semi-conductor parts to Extrude Hone AFM for surface finishing for over 53 years. Our patented process makes a real difference in terms of surface finish results. Achieve the best possible surface finish by sending components to Extrude Hone AFM. Results will vary depending on the desired outcome; our patented process is always customized to achieve exact intended results in each application.

What dimensional tolerances can Extrude Hone hold?

We can hold tolerances within 1-ten thousandths of an inch (.00001). For the sake of comparison, think about the diameter of a human hair, which is about three to four thousandths of an inch in diameter (.003-.004). That is some 30-40 graduations of the tolerances we can hold.

How much material is removed during the Extrude Hone AFM process?

During the Extrude Hone AFM process, some material is removed to finish and polish the surface material of your component. How much material is removed depends on the roughness of the surface at the start and our intended results. An average machined finish would require removal of approximately .0015-.003 inches of material. We can make sure your component still fits your exact specs so it can still work smoothly with the rest of your components.

How do you control the amount of material removed?

We control the Extrude Hone AFM process and the amount of material that is removed by adjusting these variables in each application of our process:

  • Tooling
  • Media flow pressure
  • Viscosity of the media
  • Abrasive concentration of the media

During the Extrude Hone AFM process, the tooling is a holding fixture that directs media flow to the target area of the part. During this, the tooling protects areas where abrasion is not desired. Media flow pressure ranges from 200-2000 psi.

The media carrier, silicon rubber, comes in 3 main viscosities: high, medium, and low. The silicon carbide abrasive ranges in size from the fineness of baby powder to the coarseness of buckshot.

All of these variables are adjusted to achieve the exact intended results. Because of this, each and every application destined for Extrude Hone AFM must be specifically engineered and developed.
