During the Extrude Hone AFM process, do you actually remove any material when polishing metal?
Answer: Yes. Depending on how rough your turbine or pump’s surface is before being extrude honed, the amount of material that will be removed during the process will vary. In most instances, an average machine finish (approximately 125ra) would result in the removal of approximately .0015-.004 inches of material to bring it to a 63ra. If the component has a cast finish, the surface will be rougher (250ra), so more material will be removed during extrude honing.
How do you control the amount of material that’s removed?
We control the amount of material removed during the Extrude Hone AFM process by adjusting different variables – including
- the tooling
- media flow pressure
- the viscosity
- abrasive concentration of the media
The tooling consists of a holding fixture which directs media flow to the target area of the part. During this, it protects areas where abrasion is not desired. Media flow pressure ranges from 200 to 2000 psi.
The media carrier, silicon rubber, comes in three basic viscosities (high, medium, and low). The silicon carbine abrasive ranges in size from the fineness of baby powder to the extreme coarseness of buckshot.
