Why media matters
Extrude Hone AFM invented this finish machining tool – media – which enables us to finish and polish even the most difficult to reach parts of components. Our media is a plastic, abrasive-laden polymer that has very rheological properties. As a result, the media is able to abrade surfaces it flows across is a selective, controllable manner. Over the 53 years we’ve been in business, we’ve custom designed thousands of media types to achieve a wide range of outcomes from fine honing to aggressive surface removal, as well as everything in-between.How is our media special?
Our media is special, as we previously mentioned, because it is specifically formatted to achieve ideal results in each project. The way this works is that the media suspends abrasive particles uniformly while at the same time allowing them to recirculate. Consequently, there are always fresh abrasive materials at the surface of the media, yielding ideal results for even the most intricate components. This continuously abrasive surface of the media acts as a consistent and controllable cutting tool interface that generates uniform surfaces and edges of unsurpassed quality.
Varying viscosities
Over the years, we have mastered the art of crafting media to suit an intended purpose. We have developed a whole variety of highly durable, hard-working media formulations that produce highly precise, perfect results every time they are applied to a component. Viscosities vary from “just below a brick” to materials that are thin enough to flow at nearly the speed of sound through a tiny 0.5mm nozzle. Simply amazing!
A plethora of rheology profiles
Our media also has a wide range of rheology profiles. Some materials are much thicker at rest than in use, and others are the total opposite. Abrasive grain sizes range from a fine powder-like 1000-grit to 8-grit. No matter what rheology profile the media may be, it always flows through the component without clogging or separating – plus it won’t break down after continuous cycling. Our media’s durability and quality is simply remarkable in every application.
